October 2011 - THIS week's PICTURE

Tom at Easter, Upper Winchendon: Joiner photograph by Malcolm Aslett

Another root through my archives to find a picture of Tom to play with. This is in front of a row of houses in Upper Winchendon. Again I have played with Flaming Pear's Contrasting filter to give it more oomph. As the picture is three or four years old the silvery edge and sharpening of colour emphasizes in my mind the dream like quality of a past memory. The sort of thing they do in TV productions to show what we are seeing is not part of the present narrative. There was a gap in the original joiner that I have hidden with the globe at bottom left. I thought it worked to some degree because of the football and the mirroring of the colours and tones in the actual sky. Though there is a lot of criticism to be found regarding these kinds of filters that remove the 'realistic' tones of the original scene I think there is a place for them. Like the joiner process itself it can make us look at a scene freshly and attempt to guess at the separation of what has changed from the source before the camera to the viewing of the image.
